food

Burrito Mex kindly share their love of Mexican street food with London, right from their sleek little restaurant in Earlsfield.

There are no fancy special formulas here, just honesty and fresh, authentic ingredients assembled with love and a loada’ knowledge.

Choose from all the favourites: burritos, quesadillas or some macho nachos, and top any or all with a selection of prime chargrilled meats, vegetables or halloumi.

There is also the Burrito Mex roadside chicken – a welcome addition to any menu, we’re sure you’ll agree – which is marinated overnight, chargrilled and then glazed with a salsa of your choice.

Get some to go and wash down with a triple-certified coffee, then we guarantee this Garratt Lane hotspot will be your new favourite.

food   menu

Hailing from Terni in Umbria, Il Girasole’s proprietor Alessandro has worked his way through the ranks of Italian hospitality, making the leap from manager at London’s Osteria Antica Bologna to his current position as the proud owner of his own trattoria and pizzeria.

The restaurant’s premises, too, close to the action along Earlsfield’s Garratt Lane, reflect the down-home tone of his rustic Umbrian-inflected offering, with Italian furniture and artwork commissioned from a local Wandsworth artist.

Umbrian (and even more specifically Norcian) dishes, dot the menu at Il Girasole.

Black truffle and Umbrian sausage even makes it onto this south London restaurant’s pizza menu, in the form of the house special Norcia.

Earlsfield’s premier Italian trattoria, Il Girasole’s Garratt Lane premises are often buzzing, so book early and take your place at this very Umbrian table.

location   drinks   food   ambience

Where the rewiring of motors, fans and pumps once filled the place with copper wire, The Earlsfield now has four diverse drinking and dining areas.

And a long arch, stretching to the commuter tunnel of the railway station, evokes the Chicago Rib Shack circa 1975 look with copper pendant lights, button-upholstered vinyl booths and bare brick walls.

The menu is a homage to our allies across the pond, with ribs and steaks, but still enough British pub favourites to satisfy refugees from the area’s many Young’s pubs: fish pie, risotto, sandwiches, salads, samosas.

Our beef brisket was a little dry and the promised wasabi kick in the veal jus wasn’t discernable, but the ribs were better, and side dishes such as the cauliflower gratin were up to task, as was an Amaretto cheesecake.

It’s perhaps little surprise then that it doesn’t do everything well, but this is Zone 3, which is like Middle Earth if you’re seeking a fashionable bar.

The food here focuses on Thai and Indochinese crowd pleasers.

Expect, then, dishes ranging from duck springs rolls, dim sum, Thai beef salads and roasted fillet of cod with tamarind and chilli jam to beef panang, Thai red curry, pad Thai, hot drunken noodles, laksa and tom yum.

The Amaranth specials such as ginger beer with lemongrass and chilli, and Thai iced tea with milk sound good.
